The source of my inspiration, The Namesake, takes place in the late 1960s, following the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965. After having researched immigration patterns in the U.S., I'd like my story to take place in the late 1980s, a period in which the Asian population began setting a strong presence in the West Coast.
According to the New York Times, the asian population in the United States grew 70% between 1980 and 1988, with immigrants changing the political and social landscape of California. Thus, I've decided that the appropriate setting would encompass that of a historical melting pot such as the state of California, Washington, or even Oregon. However, given that my current location, South Florida, resembles the climate and scenery of Southern California, setting the location of my story in the Golden State would therefore make the most sense. Aside, the 80s in California was a pivotal period in both sports and urban art, something to take into consideration when bringing out different elements of American culture.
